When it comes to unoccupied property insurance, get yourself kitted out with the one thing that will make yourself sleep better at night, a good lock.

If everyone ensured that their empty house, or flat, or commercial premises was properly secured by strong locks and security devices, then unoccupied property insurance would be a lot cheaper.

The problem is, that many properties are just far too easy to enter for the opportunistic thief, who can then steal whatever takes their fancy.

Indeed, recent reports from the media suggest that such crimes are becoming far more widespread and there are even reports of gangs of thieves entering empty homes and then proceeding to literally empty them at leisure. This includes all the fixtures and fittings, with the heating system being a prized catch.

This might sound odd – who’d want to steal a complete central heating system, but when you remember the price of boilers (most go for just shy of £1,000), the price of copper tubing (pounds just for one metre) and the price of radiators (hundreds of pounds depending on type), you can see why it is so attractive. And, unfortunately, there is also willing buyers who are prepared to look the other way, knowing that it may be stolen, but they can’t resist a good price.

So given that there are so many thefts around at the moment, why is it that so many people are relaxed when it comes to house security? Now, okay, let’s be honest, if a gang of crooks are determined to break into your home and have all day to do it, then you’re going to struggle to keep them out. But, by using good locks, you’ll make their job harder, and certainly keep put the chancers.

Now, most house locks these days are still based on a design introduced by one Linus Yale way back in 1848. It was he who came up with the idea of a cylindrical pin tumbler. And although his son update the design, it’s still basically the same principle employed by all of today’s tubular pin tumbler locks.

The principle is simple. The lock mechanism is made up of a cylindrical hole in which fits a plug. For the lock to open, the plug has to rotate and numerous driver pins and key pins have to be aligned correctly for this to happen. And it can only happen when the correct key is inserted.

They can of course be picked, but it takes a high degree of skill to pick a Yale lock, which can’t be said for some other varieties.

So, when you take out your unoccupied property insurance, increase the odds of your not having to use it by equipping your dwelling, or office, with the best locks you can afford. It will certainly help.
